Road vehicles* whose net mass is more than 3000 kg must undergo technical (mechanical) inspections. The frequency of these inspections, and the circumstances in which they must be conducted, are determined by regulation and the Highway Safety Code respectively. Vehicles whose net mass is 3000 kg or less need not be inspected annually.
*Road vehicle:
A motorized vehicle that can be driven on a highway and must be registered under the Highway Safety Code. Trailers, semi-trailers and detachable axles, though non-motorized, are nonetheless considered motor vehicles. Vehicles that run only on rails and electrically propelled wheelchairs are not road vehicles.
