Certain steps must be taken to ensure the transfer of ownership of a vehicle that you are buying from an individual (private sale). The same applies if you are selling to a merchant, whether or not you buy a replacement vehicle or receive a gift automobile from the merchant. If you sell to a merchant, you are entitled to a credit of the registration fees that you paid (the credit is calculated in proportion to the remaining period of validity of the registration).
