The owner of a road vehicle* must have insurance covering property damage. Under the Automobile Insurance Act, the insurance must be held with a private company and must provide for coverage of at least $50 000. The Highway Safety Code requires drivers to have their driver's licence with them, as well as their registration certificate and a certificate of insurance.
*Road vehicle:
A motorized vehicle that can be driven on a highway and must be registered under the Highway Safety Code. Trailers, semi-trailers and detachable axles, though non-motorized, are nonetheless considered motor vehicles. Vehicles that run only on rails and electrically propelled wheelchairs are not road vehicles.
